Potter was a four-year letter winner for the Pioneers. He was Lewis & Clark's first male four-year All-American (in multiple events). He was named an All-American in the 200 fly (1:57.09) at the NAIA National meet in 1989, All-American in the 200 fly (1:53.01) and 400 IM (4:10.84) as a sophomore, setting the school record in the 400 IM with that time. He was named an All-American in the 200 fly again in 1991 (1:53.67) and as a senior in 1992 (1:55.45).
