Bakke was a four-year letter winner in both football and basketball for the Pioneers. A Northwest Conference pole vault champion in 1947, 1948, and 1949, he was an integral member of 1949 track team, Lewis & Clark’s first conference championship team. He earned All-NWC honors as a tight end on the football team in 1949. He was a member of the 1950 Hall of Fame football team that finished with a perfect 9-0 record and defeated San Francisco State, 61-7, in the Pear Bowl.
