Buchanan earned 13 varsity letters at Albany College from 1930 to 1934, to include four in football, four in basketball, four in track and field, and one in baseball. He served at quarterback, halfback, and punter in football, averaged ten points per game in basketball, scored a third of his team’s points in four years, and in track he pole vaulted 11-6 with a bamboo pole, ran the 100 in 10.2, and threw the discus 116 feet.
