Jones was a four-year starter in football and baseball and a three-year starter in basketball, earning 12 varsity letters over his Lewis & Clark career. He earned Second Team NAIA All-American and AP College Division Honorable Mention honors in football as a senior, and twice gained NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in baseball. His senior season, he was named AP College Division First Team Academic All-American in football and baseball and to the regional Academic All-American team in baseball. He was recognized in his junior year in basketball by the NAIA with the national Emil S. Liston Award for scholarship and citizenship. He was named to All-NWC teams nine times – four in football, four in baseball and once in basketball. Jones’ exploits as a three-sport college athlete earned him a nine-page feature spread in Sports Illustrated in May of 1981. Drafted by the San Diego Padres, Jones played briefly in the minor leagues before beginning a long career with Nike.
