Engebretson was a four-year letter winner in football. In 1954 he was a Williamson System Little All-American and First-Team All-Conference, and in 1955 Williamson System Little All-American and All-Conference. His Pioneer career ended with 1,895 rushing yards.
Engebretson and his wife Norma lived in McMinnville, Ore. and have five children, 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. They both retired in early 1990 and loved traveling the back roads on the eastern side of the Cascades. They lost Norma's youngest son, Steven in 2005, followed by Norma in March of 2012. They were married for 34 years, the same number Engebretson wore at L&C.
