A four-year letter winner in football and baseball and a one-year member of the wrestling team. Held was the NWC Champion in the 178 pound weight class. He was NWC First-Team selection and earned NAIA District 2 honors in football his junior year. He missed his senior year in football because of a knee injury. He was also on the NWC First-Team in baseball, both his junior and senior years. He also earned a spot on the NWC Honorable Mention in baseball his sophomore year. He co-captained both the football and baseball teams during his senior year.
Following graduation, he assisted Fred Wilson with the defensive team, before signing a contract with the Cincinnati Reds as a pitcher in 1963. He pitched for two seasons in the Florida State League and in the Three I league, before he injured his right elbow. He returned to Portland and taught and coached at Centennial High School for several years and then worked for Carnation Company and with the National sales training departments at Toyota Motors Corp. and Nissan Motors Corp. He then stated his own company, Motivation Unlimited as a motivation speaker. He married his high school sweet heart, Susan Freed in 1996; they are retired and live in Indio, Calif.
