Johnson was a three-year letter winner in track and field and the 1987 NCAA Division III National Champion in the javelin throw, qualifying for Nationals in the javelin again in 1988 (finished 13th). She was a three-time All-Conference selection in the javelin, placing third in 1986, 1987, and 1988. She scored all three years in NAIA District 2 competition, finishing sixth in 1986, second in 1987, and seventh in 1988. She holds the school record in the javelin (146-3), and is the class record holder in the javelin for each of her three years. She is ranked on the L&C Top-20 all-time list in five individual events.
