A four-year letterman in track and field and basketball, Michelsen is a three-time All-American in track. He set the school record in the discus of 163-4 that stood for 21 years, won three NWC discus titles, and finished in the top six in the NAIA national championships three straight years, including second in 1957. He led the basketball team in scoring and rebounding three years after being second in both categories as a freshman, and had a career average of 11.9 points and 12.7 rebounds in 101 games.
