A multi-sport athlete, Lilly's athletic ability was best demonstrated through her swimming during an era when women’s intercollegiate athletics was in its formative stages but had yet to recognize all-stars or keep statistics. She was an alternate on the 1958 U.S. Pan-American Games team, winning numerous regional, junior national, and national swim titles. In addition to swimming, she excelled at volleyball and basketball.
