Hergert was an All-American running back, First-Team Williamson System, and Second-Team NAIA as a senior and a four-time All-Northwest Conference selection. He came within 107 yards of setting the national career rushing record with a total of 3,836 yards, setting the NWC and L&C rushing and scoring records with an average of 106.5 yards per game and 6.1 yards per carry for 36 games. He scored 296 career points, including 102 in eight games as a senior. He was also a four-year letterman in baseball, earning All-NWC infielder honors three times, and lettered one year in basketball.
