A two-time all-Northwest Conference baseball infielder, Ward played shortstop for the 1957 team that won the first Northwest Conference title for Lewis & Clark. He batted .469 and .439 in his two seasons, signed a professional contract after his junior year, and went on to become the first Pioneer ever to make it in the major leagues. He earned Rookie of the Year honors with the Chicago White Sox in 1963. (Charter member of Hall of Fame)
