As a two-time All-American in track & field and Honorable Mention All-American in football, Burkhart set an NAIA District 2 record in the hammer throw of 168-11 in 1976 that stood for 11 years. He was fifth in the hammer in the NAIA nationals in 1975 and 1976, won first in NWC competition in that event in 1976, was a two-time district champion, and won 19 first places in hammer and discus over the course of two years. He was also a four-year starter in football, including three at defensive tackle, and earned All-NWC and NAIA All-American mentions as a senior.
