Hurley was an Honorable Mention All-American in basketball in 1979 and a First-Team All-Northwest Conference team in 1978 and 1979. He led the team in scoring both years with an average of 18.5 as a junior and 19.8 as a senior. He played forward as a junior and led the team in rebounding with a 7.2 average. As a senior playing guard, he was second in rebounding and led the team in assists with 102. During his career, he averaged 19.2 points and 6.8 rebounds and shot 51.2 percent from the floor.
Hurley resides in Portland, Ore. with his wife Connie. They have two sons, Connor and Kevin. Hurley is in his 33rd year as a teacher and coach at David Douglas HS. He participated in a year long teacher exchange program in Adelaide, South Australia in 2001. He enjoys fitness activities and golfing.
