A four-year letterman in track & field and basketball, Wright was a four-time All-American high jumper, finishing in the top five at the NAIA National meet all four years, including second in 1968 when he qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. He won three NWC high jump and one triple jump titles, set the L&C high jump record in 1970 at 6"-10". His best triple jump was 45"-10". He also led the basketball team in rebounding as a senior and had career average of 7.4 points and 7.0 rebounds.
