Wessbecher set the Pioneer school record in the 200 butterfly with a second-place NAIA Nationals finish in 1982. He also finished eighth at NAIA nationals in the 100 butterflyfly in 1982. Twice he earned All-American status, and is listed among the top L&C swimmers in three events. In 1979, he placed second in District and the NWC in the 100 fly while grabbing gold medals in the 200 fly. In 1980, he was fifth at the NAIA Nationals in the 200 fly, eighth in the 100 fly, claimed NWC third place in the 500 free, second in the 100 fly, and first in the 200 fly.
