Stephens was an offensive lineman for four years in football and a three-year letterman in track & field. He played football in 1948 and 1949 before serving in Korea with the U.S. Marines, then returning to complete his college degree in 1951. He captained the 1952 Pioneer football team, was a pole vaulter and javelin thrower in track, and set the L&C record in javelin. (Inducted posthumously in 1983)
